    Common questions

    Is it really free?

    Yes — many households pay nothing for phone service through California Lifeline. Some still pay a small amount depending on the plan and household, but the savings are real and the help applying is always free.

    How long does it take to get enrolled?

    About 10 minutes to apply, then a few days for the state to confirm your eligibility. If everything checks out, your discount starts right away. If something’s missing, we call you and help fix it.

    Can I keep my phone number?

    Yes. If you already have a number you want to keep, we’ll port it over for you at no cost. You won’t miss calls from family, your doctor, or anyone else important.

    What happens next year?

    California Lifeline renews every year. We’ll remind you when it’s time and help you re-certify, so your benefit never lapses. You don’t have to track dates — that’s our job.
